“Classic Damask Wallpapers reintroduces designs from Zoffany’s earliest collections. The first three designs originate from Temple Newsam, the very first wallpaper collection produced by Zoffany. In the 1980s, the original Zoffany design team was commissioned to reproduce some of the fabulous and precious wallpapers from the interior of the house. The Temple Newsam collection became the foundation upon which the company built its future collections.”

“Alvescot is taken from a recently sourced document from the early 20th century which shows a pattern in the style of the Baroque and early Rococo period [1680-1760]. “A grand design that was once hung in the long gallery at Temple Newsam. Tall vases are arranged one above the other with floral wreaths sprays of blossom and foliage in a high repeat of just over a metre. The original design had a repeat of 18 feet and would have been manufactured as a special commission and at great cost. Zoffany reproduced this paper from a document of 1826 which was based on the earlier version from 1735-50.”

“Oak Garland is a design depicting garlands of oak leaves and acorns tied up with ribbons and placed against a diamond pattern of tiny dots. The original late 18th century paper was printed in gold on a pink stained ground. It is believed that this paper was hung in the ground floor drawing room at Temple Newsam in 1796 during the remodelling undertaken by Frances the last Viscountess of Irwin. This paper has proved popular since it was first launched by Zoffany and can be seen in many country houses and hotels”

“Tours is inspired by a brightly coloured green and gold woven silk damask dating from the midnineteenth century. The pattern shows scrolling acanthus leaves with flowers and bunches of quince fruit. Its focal point is a stylised flower with an artichoke centre. Designs like this were popular in Europe from the 1500s onwards being woven in many countries such as Italy France Spain and Britain.”

“A magnificent design sourced from the Zoffany archive which features a rising sunflower and ornate acanthus leaves. The original paper dates to the mid 18th century between 1735-50 and is coloured with dark green damask on a darker green ground. The design can be traced to a brilliant red silk which was specially woven for the Sun King Louis XIV of France and was used within the Palace of Versailles.”
