“MAY is dedicated to May Morris. Born in 1862, May was the younger of William Morris and Jane Burden's two daughters. May showed early and exceptional promise as an artist as well as a craftsperson. She also had a formal art education in London, at what is now the Royal College of Art. The two Morris girls were often asked to act as models for sketches. In 1893, May published a book, Decorative Needlework, that outlined her philosophy of art and design. She advocated that designers should study nature: 'the living flower should inspire a living ornament … certain characteristics being dwelt upon, but the forms all simplified, leaves flatly arranged, stems bent in flowing curves to fill the required spaces.'”

“Originally, CHRYSANTHEMUM (1876) was created as a woodblock print in both subtle neutral tones and classic contrasting colors which emphasized the winding chrysanthemums against a foliage background. In the British Heritage II collection, pale colored chrysanthemum and other meadow flowers are facing upwards to the left and right in alternate ‘rows’, against a field of small gold foliage in grey and beige. The background is composed of leaves and stems, colored in soft tones to create a three dimensional effect. In this toile interpretation elegant linework enhances the detail and form of the original pattern recolored here to match all of the British Heritage col- lections.”

“William Morris produced a number of patterns based on the different rivers of London. This pattern, created in 1884, represents the Wandle. It is on the river Wandle at Merton Abbey that Morris had the works of Morris & Co. He took over the site in June 1881 and the company remained at this site until 1940 when it closed down. The design was inspired by historic textiles, especially fifteenth-century velvets that often featured a strong diagonal or meandering branch from which various flowers emanated. The original design would have needed 32 blocks to print it. Morris took a new approach in the way he used natural forms in his designs. He understood plants intimately but never copied them literally. He didn't think it was possible or desirable to imitate nature. He believed that patterns should have 'beauty, imagination and order,' using these principles across all his work.”

“Revamped with fresh color combinations, Pimpernel wallpapers and fabrics capture the distinct styling of William Morris’ original, block printed pattern. Pimpernel is one of William Morris' most famous designs. It was created in 1876 by William Morris as a wallpaper and named after the small pimpernel flowers rather than the large tulips entwined with scrolling willow leaves within the pattern.This piece is a clear example of the relationship Morris created between the design of wallpapers and fabrics, influenced by oriental models. Titled Pimpernel, it was created around 1876 and is an example of how the interest for Japanese design lead to the simplification of lines and colors. Only plants coming from the East were chosen or ones that would adapt to eastern style, comparatively austere, like chrysanthemums, jasmines or willow branches. Originally this design was block printed in distemper colors, by hand, on paper. Now it is available on non-woven, a high-quality material that is easy to install and to maintain.”

“Woodland is a simple, subtle and versatile all over leaf pattern. Originally it was taken from the background pattern of Lily wallpaper designed by Morris in 1874. Lily Leaf was a simple small-scale leaf design, came in a color palette to work beautifully with a vast array of Morris prints and was printed as a delicate semi-plane. One more source of inspiration for Woodland was Willow Bough, with its curving willow branches. Many of Morris's wallpaper designs were based on plant forms which he studied at first hand. Some of his patterns, such as ‘Trellis’ and ‘Carden Tulip’ were drawn from plants in his own gardens. Others such as ‘WiIIow Bough’ - were inspired by wild flowers and trees which he had seen on country waIks.”
