“Removed from No. 29 Sackville Street in 1990, the original wallpaper fragment has an almost Jacobean feel with bold statement colour in the block printed floral motifs possibly dating around 1730. Sackville Street in the Piccadilly area of London was attractive to the minor nobility and by the beginning of the nineteenth century the tailoring trade had established itself in the area. The studio team at Designers Guild re-worked the design completely by re-painting with just the leaves alone in a softer form and flowing scale.”

“The original wallpaper fragment was in a single tonal colour block print in a panelled form edged with vertical stripes. The team at Designers Guild re-worked this as an all-over pattern in multi colour tones to create a more versatile design. Removed in 1990 from No.17 Carlisle Street in London's Soho district built in 1765 - the name came from the mansion built in the mid 1680's which was occupied by the Countess of Carlisle. No.17 Carlisle Street still exists today as one of the largest houses in the area and the exterior and interior still retain many original features.”

“This handsome surface printed geometric wallpaper has been faithfully re-produced from the original which was likely to have been created using the more labour intensive method of hand block printing wallpapers pre 1839. After the mechanisation of printing, production in Britain rose from around one million rolls in 1834 to nearly nine million rolls by 1860. This stylish classic geometric is offered in seven chalky colourways and printed on a non-woven matt heavyweight ground for ease of hanging. Whilst little history is available from this wallpaper found in the English Heritage archive, the team at Designers Guild were drawn to the modernity and architectural form of the design.”

“The fragment of wallpaper which formed the inspiration for this design was found at No.37 Craven Street in central London built around 1731. Little is known as to the exact date of the wallpaper but the team at Designers Guild were instantly attracted to the design which imbued such a delicate sense of vintage romance yet felt so relevant for today. The Designers Guild studio team created new original artwork which was hand painted to retain as much of the spirit of the original.”

“This small scale trellis patterned wallpaper embodies simplicity and sophistication. Traditionally surface printed, the stamped effect floral motifs are delicately framed by a trellis form. In eight colourways covering the versatile palette used across the collections. Coordinating fabric also available. Thought to date between 1760 and 1820 this wallpaper fragment was found at no.80 St John Street - a very ancient and important route from the City of London towards Islington and to the North of England. The area in Clerkenwell at the time was not a particularly fashionable place to live and tended to be inhabited by tradesmen with their work often carried out in the ground floor or back yard of the house. No.80 St John Street is likely to have been built in the 1750's and was in continuous occupation until 1821 by two distillers who both lived and worked on the premises. The Designers Guild studio team created new original artwork which was hand stamped to retain as much of the spirit of the original.”
