TAPET W-1530114-2
“Although Blackthorn is a later pattern, Morris's hand is evidence. Much of the Blackthorn shows the work of John Henry Dearle, but Morris's hand is clear - his signature daisies, and the swirling leaves especially. It was 1892 adapted for machine print while keeping the authentic colors. The pattern shows a thorny type of shrub, which comes alive in spring when it bursts into a froth of white blossom, in the middle of other flowering plants. It is well known for its sloes, too - the blue-black fruits used in sloe gin. The presence of the five petal blooms indicates the spring season. In folklore, the Blackthorn tree is known as both the Mother of the Woods and the Dark Crone of the Woods, the dark face of the triple goddess of the moon. Blackthorn is hedge that grows around Sleeping Beauty's castle, forming the thick, impenetrable bramble that hides the magic castle from the unworthy. Blackthorn by William Morris / John Henry Dearle displays flawless techniques and a distinctive style. The sources were plants themselves, observed in their gardens or on country walks, and also images of plants in 16th century woodcuts, illuminated manuscripts, tapestries and other textiles incorporating floral imagery. Morris also encouraged intricacy and elaboration so that the repeat itself was disguised.”
